Grading

How will my child be graded on daily assignments and assessments?

Student work will be graded utilizing a scoring system that describes performance at four proficiency levels:

4 points = Advanced (A)

3 points = Proficient (P)

2 points = Partially Proficient (PP)

1 point = Novice (N)

Will my child receive grade checks?

Your child will complete an academic reflection on a bi-weekly basis. Through your child’s reflection, I will update you on how he or she is progressing towards the targeted standards in each of the domains.

How will my child’s grades be reported on his or her report card?

An overall standards-based grade will be given for each domain on the report card. The grades are:

ME = Meets with Excellence

MP = Meets with Proficiency

DP = Developing Proficiency

WB = Well Below

Assignments

Will assignments be posted online?

Due to the uncertainty of how this school year will pan out, I have decided to post all assignments for each quarter in Google Classroom. This way, whether your child is in school, face-to-face, or doing distance learning from home, he or she will have access to the coursework for each subject area.

Which online programs will my child use this school year?

The following online programs will be used: i-Ready, Achieve3000, ConnectEd, and Code.org.

How many hours should my child devote to schoolwork on the days he or she is doing distance learning?

While at home, your child should spend approximately 4 hours on schoolwork daily. The amount of hours will vary depending on the subject area and/or difficulty of the assignment(s). I understand that it may be difficult to adjust to this new style of learning; therefore, I have tried my best to minimize your child’s workload without greatly affecting the quality of the learning experience. If you would like additional assignments for certain subject areas, please feel free to contact me. I will provide you with differentiated learning materials; however, the additional work provided will not be factored into your child’s grade for the desired domains.

Safety

Will the use of face coverings be required in the classroom?

To minimize the spread of respiratory droplets between and among individuals, students will be required to wear a face mask while in the classroom. A face shield may be worn over a face mask; however, a face shield is not a substitute for a face mask unless your child has a legitimate health problem and has an official doctor’s note. As long as the students are 6 ft apart, I will try to provide 5 minute breaks per hour to go outside and take off their masks.

Will the use of face coverings be required outside the classroom?

Students will be required to wear a face mask around the school campus, whether it be to the restroom or to lunch. At lunch, your child will be seated outdoors in the cafeteria lanai area. He or she will be socially distanced from other students and will obviously be able to take off his or her face mask when eating and/or drinking. Students will not be required to use a face mask at recess. As much as possible, the staff will try to enforce social distancing between and among students at the recess field.

Will my child be with the same cohort for the entire school day?

Your child will be with about half of the homeroom class on any given day and will be distanced from others as much as possible. My class has been set up following the 6 foot distancing recommendation with all desks facing forward. In addition, there is a designated door for entering and exiting the classroom. Students will also learn the procedure for traveling within the classroom. There will be no sharing of supplies and materials. As part of students’ civic responsibility, your child will be asked to wipe his or her desk, chair, and other high-touched surfaces at the end of each day.

Behavior

How will misbehavior be dealt with?

Safety and learning is of the utmost importance; therefore, misbehavior will not be tolerated. Evidence of misbehavior will be kept on file. The following consequences will be enforced should misbehavior occur:

  • The student will receive a warning.
  • The teacher will set up a student-teacher conference during recess.
  • The student will complete a behavioral log with his or her reflection on the misbehavior, and it will be sent home for a parent signature.
  • The teacher will call a parent.
  • The teacher will refer the student to the counselor.
  • The teacher will refer the student to the principal.
