Special guest Mark Ellis visits Gr. 4 Students

On Thursday, April 27, the fourth grade students were fortunate enough to meet Hōkuleʻa navigator and educator, Mark Ellis. Through videos, demonstrations and hands-on activities, Mr. Ellis shared the purpose of Hōkuleʻa’s journey, to impart to the message, “Mālama Honua” or care for our Earth. Students also had the opportunity to witness how Mr. Ellis used some of the same knowledge they learned from their Hawaiian Studies Teacher, Kumu Billy Remular, building their own waʻakaulua (Hawaiian double hulled sailing canoe) like the Hōkuleʻa using recycled materials and learned traditional way finding practices, for example, using the sun, stars, ocean currents, and birds, to navigate.
